This book was an unexpected love for me. Broder has the guts to really go there in the telling of this lesbian love affair. Rachel is a lapsed Jewish woman who has committed her life to two things: work and calorie counting. Enter Miriam, an Orthodox Jewish woman that works at Rachel’s local froyo shop and upon seeing Rachel in the shop is insistent upon feeding her. Rachel’s obsession with calories quickly moves it’s way to Miriam and the two women find themselves on a journey that is wholly focused on one’s appetites: the sexual, physical, and spiritual. With mommy issues, eating disorders and religious pressure, it would be safe to say this does not have a happy ending - it is, however, incredibly always worth reading.

“Titillating and hilarious, this book is Broder’s crowning achievement (so far). Calorie-obsessed Rachel is an unlikely but irresistible heroine, and when she meets Miriam at the yogurt shop, sparks (and sprinkles!) fly. Each must reckon with her Jewish identity as well as her heart’s deepest, lushest desires, while the intense scrutiny of the mother figure looms large. This story is unflinchingly honest, unexpectedly moving, and a brilliant checkmate to shame, both carnal and spiritual. I couldn’t put it down.”
