This is a collection of essays she has published in the New Yorker, and they cover literature, fashion, lost languages, forgotten writers, famous writers, Cleopatra, Lee Miller, Ann Lowe, Amelia Earhart, and Karl Lagerfeld, all connected by Thurman’s terrifyingly sharp gaze and endlessly elegant prose. I want to know what she thinks about everything.

About the Author


Judith Thurman is the author of Cleopatra’s Nose: 39 Varieties of Desire; Isak Dinesen: The Life of a Storyteller, winner of the National Book Award for Autobiography/Biography; and Secrets of the Flesh: A Life of Colette. A staff writer at The New Yorker, she lives in New York City.
